Legislature provides steps to screwing up an expulsion
UPDATED BELOW AT 6:55 PM I have long believed that lawmakers -- or the vast majority of them -- want Assemblyman Steven Brooks expelled.
Steve Ross opponent: Cease and desist lies
UPDATE: I have posted Ross' reply here, too. The gist: Pound sand. You know the end of the campaign is near: Suzette LaGrange, who is challenging Las Vegas Councilman Steve Ross, has sent a cease and desist letter to him because of accusations made in a series of mailers. The letter, attached here, demands Ross stop saying LaGrange was on the board of Nevada Association of Industrial and Office Properties when it advocated for toll roads.
Muni races will be decided by minuscule number of voters -- again
After eight days of early voting and mail balloting, a strikingly small number of voters are poised to decide two mayoral races and one key Las Vegas council race. If this doesn't make the case for even-numbered muni elections (still the Legislature gently sleeps), I don't know what does: ►North Las Vegas mayor: 3,462, or 4 percent Overall turnout in 2009: 12.7 percent ►Henderson mayor: 6,976 Overall turnout in 2009: 14.7 percent, or 5 percent ►Las Vegas City Council, Ward 6 (Steve Ross): 1,904, or 4 percent
Expert opposes involuntary commitment bill -- and so does Steven Brooks
After Steven Brooks was taken for a mental health evaluation in January when police found him brandishing a sword at a relative's home, his colleagues began considering legislation to reform the so-called Legal 2000 process. One of the results was Assembly Bill 287, which defines how involuntary commitments would work.
Trial featuring Adelson testimony will be webcast
If you want to see Gondolier Numero Uno Sheldon Adelson's testimony in that breach of contract lawsuit by a former Sands consultant, you can. Seems a C-SPAN-like courtroom network will be webcasting the trial that begins April 3. Here's an email that went out from Courtroom View Network about the decision by Judge Rob Bare to lawyers in the case:
Incumbent accuses opponent of being "pawn" of county commissioner
So Janice Ridondo is being helped by Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins. So he has been outspoken against the incumbent, North Las Vegas Councilwoman Anita Wood. So Ridondo is Collins' liasion and tenant. Is that any reason to call her a "pawn" for Collins? Have to love the mailer attached here.
Heck of a vote
Rep. Joe Heck was one of only 10 House Republicans to vote against the Paul Ryan budget this week, saying the budget hurts Nevada, citing the changing Obamacare landscape and fretting about public lands money.
Mining misconceptions: SJR 15 is no panacea, you can tax the industry without it, legal issues could kill all taxes
I was watching “The Agenda" today and listening to progressive activist Howard Watts III hype SJR 15 to remove mining taxation from the Constitution, and it spurred me to think of all the ways, some of them dangerous, that this issue is misunderstood.
Lawmakers to Supreme Court: We can pretty much do whatever we want with Brooks
That's the gist of an answer from legislative lawyers to the writ filed by troubled Assemblyman Steven Brooks at the state Supreme Court. The highlights, with page numbers of the 45-page document, which is attached here: I. Standard of review. .....................................................................................10
