Brooks arrested again -- domestic battery, false statement to obstruct officer
ANOTHER UPDATE NOW POSTED: The Metro police report is attached here. It is somethi9ng else. UPDATE FROM METRO:
My take on the first week: Brooks was not the real story
The tax debate began and ended in the first week? Maybe.
The first Nevada expulsion attempt: Of harsh words, a newspaper banned and forgery allegations
A lawmaker disparaging his colleagues in a newspaper. The newspaper banned from the Legislative Building. The newspaper accusing a lawmaker of forging a letter to the editor. All of this and more surrounded Nevada's first attempted expulsion, which came during the first special session in the state's history three years after the Constitution was written and culminated with the lawmaker claiming he was feverish and sent the wrong copy of the offending letter to the newspaper.
Reno and Nevada make appearances on "The Daily Show"
Last night, in a satirical look at congressional folks wanting to order more tanks, "The Daily Show's" Al Madrigal brought it home. I have embedded the segment below, but here's the relevant exchange between Al Madreigal and retired Major General Paul Eaton: PE: "We have 3,000 tanks sitting in a boneyard near Reno, Nevada." AM: "When are we going to send more?" PE: "Al, why would we send more tanks to Reno, Nevada." AM: "Has Nevada been attacked?" PE: "To my knowledge, Nevada has never been attacked." Classic.
Assembly Democrats to Steven Brooks: You're out
That's the message in a brief statement released Thursday evening by the Assembly Democratic Caucus. It's part of a not-so-subtle campaign to induce Brooks to take some time away from the Legislature after several weeks of uncertainty that began with a Jan. 19 arrest and culminated this week with his strange arrival in Carson City and on again/off again agreement to take a leave.
Say it ain't so: Harry Reid's hometown being sold
Verlie Doing, the 88-year-old matriarch of Searchlight, is selling her holdings in the town where Harry Reid was born. Asking price: $4.9 million. "Now you can own your own historic town," reads the pitch. Fred Marik, the agent for Doing, has sent out a solicitation on the property (pasted below) and a description (attached here). The 41 acres encapsulate much of the city's center, and she is also selling the mineral rights.
North Las Vegas submitted amendment to tax deal last week, but Henderson now wants no part of it
UPDATE NO. 2 -- It's even worse than I thought. As soon as Henderson learned it was part of the NLV amendment last week -- that is, Henderson would have benefited, too -- City Manager Jake Snow sent a "we had nothing to do with this!" email to the speaker. I have obtained their exchange: On Jan 31, 2013, at 10:56 AM, Jacob Snow wrote:
Brooks rejects leave after days of negotiations, says he will return to Legislature
Just before noon on Monday, five legislative police officers were dispatched to Room 3159 in the Legislative Building. That is the office belonging to Assemblyman Steven J. Brooks II, who would soon be meeting with Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, whom he is accused of threatening, and Majority Leader William Horne. Two of the police officers, accompanied by Legislative Counsel Bureau Director Rick Combs, went into an anteroom inside Brooks’ office while the others met behind a closed door, theoretically to sign an agreement for Brooks to take a leave of absence.
Prominent lawyer accuses Clark County Commission chairman of breaking Open Meeting Law
Todd Bice, a well-known Las Vegas attorney, sent a letter to the district attorney this week accusing Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak of breaking the state's Open Meeting Law.
