After covering politics long enough, you think you lose the capacity to be astonished. But I find, especially in Nevada, this is not so.
First ad in key state Senate race brutalizes state Sen. Justin Jones
The ad below is online and about to go on TV with a lot of money behind it, I am reliably told. It is about this case in which state Sen. Justin Jones worked for Sands boss Sheldon Adelson and which came up when he first won his state Senate seat by 300 votes in 2012. The ad below -- people with goatees look SO sinister -- and this web page show this race is about to get nasty. He is running against Becky Harris.
New House majority leader coming to Vegas for Heck
House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy, who succeeded the defeated and resigned Eric Cantor, will be in Las Vegas next week to help Rep. Joe Heck raise money. Among those on the host committee are four gaming company luminaries: Caesars' Gary Loveman, Las Vegas Sands' Mike Leven and Station Casinos' Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. Many well-known business doyens also are on the list. Heck is considered a solid favorite against Democrat Erin Bilbray.
Republican Laxalt gets more Republicans; Miller going up on TV
Republican attorney general hopeful Adam Laxalt, who already has announced that the state's GOP sheriffs have endorsed him, now has endorsements from GOP district attorneys. In other news, it's hot again today in Las Vegas. But it's a dry heat. (I wonder if Democratic hopeful Ross Miller, the secretary of state, can get former Democratic governors such as Richard Bryan or the guy who came after him to endorse him? That would be HUGE.)
MY COLUMN: The Tesla deal had be done; now comes the hard part
Imagine if Gov. Brian Sandoval had just said no to Tesla. Imagine if he had told Elon Musk he would not submit to his demands for as much as a billion dollars in tax breaks. Imagine if the governor had announced to the world that Nevada would not play the incentives game. Just imagine. And then realize how insane that is.
